How to protect your parents from AI voice-clone scams

Your parents don’t need to understand AI. They need one habit they’ll remember under pressure. Here’s a plan you can set up together in one visit.

The plan

  • Agree on a family code word (see our safe word guide).
  • Practice the rule: any urgent money request means hang up and call back on a saved number.
  • Save key family numbers in their phone so call-backs are easy.
  • Put a short list by the phone: who to call to double-check, and where to report.

Limit what scammers can copy

The FBI suggests limiting online content of your image or voice where possible, making social media accounts private, and limiting followers to people you know. That applies to the whole family, since a scammer can clone the grandchild’s voice, not the grandparent’s.

Talk about it without fear

Frame it as a family routine, not a test of their judgment. Tell them you’d rather get a call-back than have them worry.

Frequently asked questions

My parents don’t use social media. Are they still at risk?

Yes. The voice scammers clone is usually the younger relative’s, taken from their posts or videos.
