How to set up a family safe word (code word) against voice scams

The FBI advises families to “create a secret word or phrase with your family to verify their identity.” The FCC suggests the same. It takes ten minutes and works even when a caller’s voice sounds perfect.

Pick a good code word

  • Something easy to remember but impossible to guess or look up.
  • Not a pet’s name, street, school, birthday or anything posted online.
  • Two unrelated words often work well (for example, a color and a food).

Share it the right way

  • Tell family members in person or in a private call, not in a group post or public comment.
  • Make sure grandparents, parents and older kids all know it.
  • Write it down only somewhere private (for example, a card kept in a wallet), not on social media.

The rules for using it

  • If a caller says it’s an emergency and asks for money, ask for the code word.
  • Never hint at it or offer choices. The caller must say it.
  • If they can’t, hang up and call the person back on a number you already know.
  • If the word is ever shared or posted, pick a new one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a safe word enough on its own?

It is a strong check, but also hang up and call back on a known number. Use both whenever money is involved.

What if the real family member forgets it?

Then call them back on a number you know. The safe word is a filter, not the only test.
